This festival, which is also called the Roots Homecoming Festival, was conceived to attract African-Americans and African-Europeans to return Africa and discover their roots. Juffureh village is believed to be Roots author Alex Haley’s ancestral origin through Kunta Kinteh his great-great grandfather.
Today, the festival has developed into a different dimension, and is open to all visitors. Some of the major activities organized during the festival are cultural dances, exhibitions of artworks, visits to cultural sites, and an assortment of different Gambian musical shows and seminars.
