The population is estimated at 1,546 848 inhabitants. The largest ethnic group is the Mandinka representing about 40% of the population, followed by the Fulani (also known as Peul, Pulaar, Fulfulde, Halpular or Tukulor) who represent 19%. The Wolof count for 15%, followed by the Jola and the Serahuleh who form 10% each. The smallest ethnic group in The Gambia are the Aku–descendants of the freed slaves. Today The Gambia has become a melting pot of Gambians, Europeans, Senegalese, Lebanese, Chinese, Indians, Mauritanians and others. 45% of the Gambian population is below the age of 14 with an average life expectancy of 50 |

| An estimated 85% of the Gambians are Muslims. The country is a secular state with an extraordinarily harmonious coexistence between Muslims, Christians, and those with traditional religious beliefs. As an example, both Imam and Christian priest present prayers on official occasions. | |
