The country is believed to possess an estimated 10 million tons of bauxite and some 112.7 million tons of phosphate, but these mineral resources remain untapped. Off shore oil has been discovered on the Gambian coast and is awaiting exploitation. 60% of working Gambians are involved in agricultural production. Most animal farming, rice and corn cultivation is done at a subsistence level, providing just enough food for the family growing it. Groundnut (peanut) cultivation, horticulture and fishing are The Gambia’s major exports. Hides are equally exported but have very little impact on the GDP. An estimated 100 000 visitors per year, make tourism Gambia’s most attractive source of revenue and provide employment for more than 10 000 Gambians. The establishment of The Gambia Tourism Authority and the creation of the International Roots Festival have also helped to further develop the tourism sector. |

The average Gambian receives a monthly salary of $50. |
