TELECOMMUNICATION

The Gambia has one of the best telecommunication systems in Africa. International calls are very easy to make and are inexpensive compared to other African states. GAMTEL, the Gambia Telecommunication Company, is trying to extend its landline network.

A unit price for international calls is about D0.90 (ninety bututs). Several telecentres provide easy access to calls and faxes in almost every area in the larger towns

Cellular Services

Two cellular companies, one of which is the national company, provide cellular services to clients. The arrival of the private company Africell, has quickly extended its network beyond the Gambian boarders and is presently the biggest GSM provider in the country. With a 75% national coverage, Africell has an international roaming agreement with about 51 countries worldwide and provides 46% of the mobile services. Both companies propose prepaid services with rechargeable cards and a postpaid billing service. These cards can be bought either from their outlets or from local vendors.
